We want all patients at Carefree Smiles Dentistry, whether they are individuals or families, to have access to quality dental care. Dental insurance is an ideal solution to getting treatments at an affordable price, which is sure to make more than a few people smile. We accept multiple PPO plans and our support team can help you navigate your insurance if you have questions. To learn a bit more about the fundamentals of dental insurance, keep reading below!

Dental Insurance vs. Medical Insurance

Contrary to popular belief, dental insurance is not used in the same way as medical insurance. Unlike dental insurance, medical benefits are typically only used when a serious emergency appears, whether it’s an accident or illness, and you need treatment right away. Dental insurance is meant to be used on a regular basis, traditionally once every six months for routine cleanings and checkups. More money is allocated towards preventive care because it’s the most affordable care you can buy. Committing to these treatments also helps you save money on future treatments, both restorative and emergency alike.

How Does Dental Insurance Cover Treatments?

While every dental plan is written differently, it doesn’t mean that they are so different when it comes to certain types of treatments. Preventive, minor restorative and major restorative all cover costs at different rates. Chances are your PPO plan will cover treatments in the following ways:

  • Preventive Care – This includes biannual checkups and cleanings and potentially other treatments designed to protect you from potential dental disease. You can expect close to 100 percent coverage here.
  • Minor Restorative Care – Whether it’s treatments for root canal therapy or dental fillings, your minor restorative care is covered at slightly less, averaging about 70 to 80 percent coverage.
  • Major Restorative Care – As the treatments get more complex, including crowns, bridges and dentures, your coverage percentage goes down. Expect 50 to 60 percent coverage for major restorative care.

Explore Our In-Network Savings & Learn About Out-of-Network Providers

At Carefree Smiles, we are in-network with multiple major insurance providers for your convenience. We are currently in-network with:

  • Aetna
  • Ameritas
  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield
  • Anthem
  • GEHA/Connection
  • Cigna
  • Delta Dental
  • Guardian
  • Humana
  • Lincoln Financial
  • United Healthcare/DBP Network
  • Principal
  • United Concordia Alliance Network
  • Sunlife

When a dental office says they are in-network, it really means that they have agreed to specific rates with that insurance company. This means we will not charge higher for specific treatments as long as you are in-network with that provider. These rates are usually lower than someone who is out-of-network, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still expect similar costs.
