What is a Tooth Crown Used For?
There are several reasons why Dr. Cook, Dr. Schnieder or Dr. Brann might recommend getting a dental crown. For example:
- They can protect a tooth that has been weakened by decay.
- They can restore a broken tooth or hold a cracked tooth together.
- They can hold a dental bridge in place.
- They can cover a dental implant as a single tooth replacement.
- They can hide misshapen or severely discolored teeth.
- They can protect a child’s tooth from decay if the child has trouble maintaining good oral hygiene.
In general, a crown is often a good option for improving a tooth’s shape, size, strength or appearance.
The Process of Getting Dental Crowns
Traditionally, getting a dental crown has required multiple visits. During the first appointment, the tooth would be prepared to receive the crown, which might require building it up with filling material or removing small amounts of enamel. An impression would then be taken using a goopy putty before being sent to an offsite dental lab. It could take two weeks or longer before you could actually receive your dental crown, and you would have to make a second appointment for it to be placed.
But at Carefree Smiles Dentistry, we use the CEREC Omni Cam device to design, create, fit and place your dental crown at one location during a single appointment! The device will take several pictures of your teeth before using special software to create a 3D model of your tooth (no need for a messy impression!); a special machine will then use this model to mill your new dental crown out of a block of ceramic material in just 15 minutes. Once we’ve made the necessary preparations, we can go ahead and place the crown in your mouth. You can walk away with a newly restored smile in less than an hour!
Benefits of Tooth Crowns
- Natural Appearance: A dental crown made out of ceramic can be shaded so that it blends in with your natural teeth; most people won’t be able to tell the difference when you laugh or smile!
- Durability: Crowns are designed to withstand the rigors of chewing, and they can last for a decade or longer with proper care.
- Protection: A dental crown can protect a damaged tooth from decay and prevents it from breaking further.
